Mac attack: Westerner beaten in Bangkok Apple Store
When you order a MacBook Pro from an approved Thai dealer, you don't expect to be beaten-up and arrested in the store - but this is exactly what happened to an unfortunate Mango Sauce reader.
Last Friday, I placed an order for a MacBook Pro, a 30' display and accessories at The APPLE Store in Siam Discovery Center, Bangkok. The total came to 188,000bt. Paid with a VISA Card. The APPLE employee would deliver the setup later.
While waiting for the delivery at my condo, the APPLE salesperson, phoned me and claimed to have made a mistake on the bill and wanted another 12,500 before delivery.
At this point, I decided to rethink my purchase. To be honest, Thailand has lots of corruption and I felt I might be scammed? Not sure, but canceling my order was on my to-do list the next morning.
I went to the APPLE store and the salesperson stated they could not return the money, I HAD TO PAY MORE AND ACCEPT THE COMPUTER. They won't deliver or cancel the order. I must pay 12,500bt more!
They would not reverse the credit card charges!
At this point I noticed my signed credit card receipt in the counter and took it. I did not want this rip-off APPLE store to have my signature or Credit Card info. The APPLE store employee tried to physically block me from leaving the store. Grabbed me, kicked me, scratched me punched me. This is a woman and I am not able to defend myself without injuring her. I am big. I just took the abuse.
I could not leave the shopping center. Held hostage. I was able to escape the APPLE Store and was attacked and screamed at all the way thru the Siam Discovery Mall to the street and even blocked from entering a Taxi.
The APPLE employees called security and all claimed I attacked her!
By then many security guards showed up and the claim was I was a criminal. This is all going on in Thai language. Now I am being manhandled by 5 or 6 Siam Discovery Mall security.
My expensive Nikon Camera crashed to the ground during the melee. Several bystanders joined in and abused me too.
I ended up at a Thai Police Station, charged with assaulting the employee!! All the APPLE Store employees were conspiring at the police station, telling false accounts of the events too! All in Thai language. The police were treating me like a criminal and were threatening to put me away for 48 hours!
Now I have a police record, a court date, no computer and a 188,000bt charge on my credit card!

At the risk of sounding wise after the event, when his supplier refused to deliver the goods, our battered consumer should have contacted his credit card company and asked for a refund.
If he does so now, he'll almost certainly get his money back.
Alternatively, he could offer to pay The Apple Store the additional 12,500 baht (which was almost certainly a genuine mistake) in return for them dropping the criminal charges and supplying his MacBook Pro.
If he gets a Thai person to negotiate on his behalf, there's still a good chance that this dispute can be settled amicably. After all, the store will lose out on a 200,000 baht sale if they don't compromise.
Consumer protection can't be taken for granted in Thailand so you have to be very careful about where you make your purchases. Personally, I've always enjoyed exceptional service here - even when returning expensive computer equipment.
Maintaining a sunny disposition during negotiations is crucial because Thai people often overreact to conflict.
Our anonymous reader could have handled the situation better but it's fair to say that, when I purchase my next Mac, it won't be from The Apple Store in the Siam Discovery Center.

Sujarit Israngkura co-owner of the Apple Centre Siam Discovery says, "This was an unusual and isolated incident that just got way out of control."
Dear Sir,
With reference on your story on the incident you amusingly referred to as "The Mac Attack". I do not wish to escalate this further or make comment on your board. I, as a part owner of the store, would like to explain our side of the story. I was the person who went to the police station to negotiate the poster's release and the resulting dropped charges.
The customer, who I shall refer to as Mr. J, visited the store on 27th of April to purchase a Macbook Pro 17-inch, along with a 30-inch Apple Cinema Display, other accessories and an AppleCare Plan for Apple Cinema Display. Here it gets a little bit technical. Perhaps, the nuance was difficult to explain to Mr. J given the staff's English proficiency level. Mr. J has been misinformed by other vendors that the AppleCare plan he purchased, which is a 3-year extended warranty plan of Apple, would cover both the display, CPU and other Apple accessories he had purchased. However, when the supervisor reviewed the sale order to approve the delivery, she - the supposed assailant - noted the mistake. She called Mr. J that he had in fact purchased the "wrong" AppleCare Plan. The correct plan was the AppleCare Plan for MacBook Pro, which was slightly more expensive (actually only THB 3,000 more). To this, Mr. J replied that he would reconsider changing his purchase to a different set up -- a Mac Pro and so on....
The next morning, the 28th, he arrived at the store to discuss his options. As far as we know, he still wants to buy a computer, but would consider different options. He then requested that the credit card be reversed. We told him that the transaction was already concluded on the 27th and it was not possible to reverse the transaction on the EDC, the electronic swiper. Such reversal could only be done on the same day. We could only do this by contacting our bank on Monday to reverse it by way of paper documentation or issuing our own company's cheque. As far as we know this is the way the credit card system works in Thailand. We told him to consider his options whether to pay the difference or consider the alternate set up as discussed. We were of course expecting him to barter for a discount, to which we were planning to be accommodating. Keep in mind, this was a USD 5,000 purchase. We wanted to please him.
At this point (less than 10 minutes since his arrival), with no warning, Mr. J reached over the counter, took the credit card receipt and left the store. If you have seen our store, you would know that it would be impossible for anyone to block his exit as the cashier counter is located right next to the exit door. The supervisor rushed after him to request back the receipt. He refused, pushed the supervisor and physically ATE the receipt and purchase order. He then attempted to exit the shopping center, but the supervisor followed him. Eventually the security guys got involved and took him to the security office. The shopping center sent a representative to try to resolve the situation, but he refused to talk. Anyway, we proposed to him that we would refund the purchase and that he should apologise for pushing the staff. He refused, which eventually led to the police being called up.
To make the story short, I rushed to the police station and confirmed to him our intent to refund him the purchase and asked him to make peace with the supervisor. Anyway, he agreed to delete the pictures he took while he was in the mall and agreed not to proceed further with this bizarre turn of events. I convinced the supervisor to drop the charge against him while he confessed and was fined THB 100. We traded mobile phone numbers to discuss later how we would handle the credit card refund/reversal and all went our separate ways. On Monday, I checked with the bank and found out that the credit card was already charged and the cash in our account. I called him several times to discuss how he wished to proceed, but to no avail and eventually sent him the attached e-mail. He also referred to this in the board comment section. Since then, we have proceeded the reversal/refund with the credit card company. As far as we are concerned, we have kept our side of the bargain.
We hope this clarifies our position and our handling of the event. BTW, we are not Apple. We are an independent Apple authorised reseller.
Should you have any comments or seek further clarifications, please feel free to contact us.
Best regards,
Sujarit Israngkura

Subject: Apple Centre Siam DiscoveryDear Mr. J,
First of all, we regret that the unfortunate events this past Friday and Saturday turned so unpleasantly for everyone.
By this e-mail we wish to inform you that the local Visa office and our bank confirmed that your credit card has already been charged for your purchase. There are two alternatives to move forward. First, we can process the credit card charge cancellation. However, Visa indicated that there would be a small fee that will need to be paid. This would be your account and the remaining balance will be deposited into your credit card. We will need you to contact us to prepare the paperwork. Second, we can go ahead with the transaction. We will provide you with the appropriate AppleCare plan at no extra charge (i.e, we are giving you a THB3,000 discount on the AppleCare Plan for MacBook Pro compared to the one you purchased - AppleCare Plan for Apple Cinema Display). Let us explain the difference. The AppleCare Plan that provides the coverage to both the MacBook Pro and the Apple Cinema Display is the one we are proposing to you. The one your ordered does not. If you were informed differently by other stores, then you have been misinformed. This has been confirmed by Apple representatives in Thailand. As this is the root of our misunderstanding. We will provide you with the correct one at no extra cost to you.
Please kindly contact myself or the store manager, Ms. Panadda, so that we may process your due instruction. In the meantime, should you have any questions or comments or require any assistance on any matters, please feel free to contact us.
Best regards,
Sujarit Israngkura (Pan)
Clearly, there are two sides to every story. My favourite part is where Mr J "physically ATE the receipt and purchase order."
