Cheap mobile phone calls in Thailand

Cheap mobile phone calls in Thailand

Visitors to Thailand can avoid cellphone rip-offs by bringing their own handset and slotting-in a local SIM card. International roaming might be convenient but the price is a total piss-take.

Thailand's most popular pay-as-you-go service is provided by AIS. Their 1-2-Call SIM costs 350 baht (£6/$9) and includes 100 baht of free calls. Calls within Thailand are just 5 baht per minute - saving you around 80%. If you want to fool around with the local girls, this could be important. The folks back home can reach you with an international calling card. This is cheap for them and free for you.

MBK (Mah Boon Khrong), close to Siam Square, is the best place to buy a SIM card but make sure you try before you buy. For a variety of reasons, they don't always work. If you own a compatible handset but your phone company has nobbled the thing, MBK is a good place to get it unlocked.

If the SIM doesn't work but you want to make a lot of calls, you could buy a brand new Nokia 3100 complete with 1-2-Call SIM for less than 3,000 baht (£50/$75) at MBK. Second-hand models are cheaper but the batteries are often duds. Later, you could sell the handset back to the same shop.

In Pattaya went into one of the malls bought a $10 1-2 freedom call sim card plus $10 calls - did not manage to use up the credit even though I made calls locally, to the USA and Middle East.

Big-C mall opposite Sabai Dee Massage, has a huge number of stalls on the top floor selling sim cards and phones + Nokia has a huge store there as well.

Cheers,

Aardvark.

AIS 1, 2 Call also run deals where the calls are cheaper than 5 baht per minute. I currently have one that is 2 baht for the first minute then 1 baht per minute thereafter. Texting is 1 baht per text.

The biggest drama I have with thai mobiles is I always seem to get calls from thai people looking for whoever, it always turns out they have dialed the correct number, but been patched thru somehow to me.

I often ring my girlfriend from Australia on her thai phone and on many occassions her phone rings and so does this other lady (who we now know as Noi). Of course Nois phone rings, my girls phone rings, those two have a nice chat and I can't hear anyone.

Ive heard other people speak about similar problems its got something to do with the thai telephone network v's the population.

I find the New mobile deals at MBK are great of course it definately helps if you can speak a bit thai, prices fall drastically as opposed to what the tourist with the bum bag strapped to their hip is paying. Of course you can go one better than that and don't go at all, just send ur thai girlfriend, she'll save a packet on the phone deal and come home with a whole heap of other junk you didnt need with the change she makes.

Happy calling :-)
