It's official - Thailand's bars will close at 12pm from March 1. A few specified zones, including Patpong, are exempt but Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are not. The move is unwelcome for fun-loving farangs but it comes as no surprise to observers of Thai politics.

The nightlife clampdown is just one part of the Thai government's increasingly authoritarian agenda. For example, it announced yesterday that, from March 29, a 10pm curfew will be imposed on the under-18s - unless they are accompanied by their parents.

Thailand's lurch towards authoritarianism comes as a result of the electoral success of the ultra-nationalist Thai Rak Thai party. It promised Thai voters economic growth and cheap healthcare plus a clampdown on drug use and antisocial behaviour. Against all the odds, it delivered but some of the methods employed were extreme. For example, the war on drugs was won by shadowy death-squads who executed thousands of suspected dealers.

Far from upsetting the Thai people, these tough social order measures have proved extremely popular. Political opposition has melted away and the position of the Thai Rak Thai Party now looks unassailable. The moans of farangs denied a late drink will inevitably fall on deaf ears.

Social order takes priority over tourism.
