Tail-chasing Thai monk defrocked

On the morning of June 22, 2006, the people of Thailand woke up to shocking headlines in the tabloid newspapers. A well-known Phra Khru abbot from the province of Phatthalung had been caught on film engaging in illicit sexual acts. In several of the more than 60 photographs, his partner appeared to be a young girl, probably under age, while the abbot himself is in his late 60s or early 70s. Even more horrifying was the image of the monk having sexual intercourse with a dog.

The photos had allegedly been taken in secret by laymen living near the temple who were fed up with the abbot's behaviour and wanted to reveal his actions to the public. They took the evidence to his senior monks and to the police, but by the time the police arrived, the abbot had fled. He is still at large.

I seem to recall someone telling me that some of the monks have a past criminal history and instead of being caught and thrown in jail, they become monks and the police basically cannot touch them. Maybe someone in the know would like to comment on that, a Thai perhaps.

If this is the case, and they hide behind the sanctuary of the temple walls then I'm sure there are some questionable things that go on, I would assume however that it usually has something to do with financial gain instead.

I view western world church organisations as nothing more than big business and sorry to say but on a much smaller scale, Thai temples can take advantage of people's blind faith in a similar manner.

Instead of greed, this particular monk just happened to succumb to the punani and got royally busted.

The backbone of religion in the Kingdom (if you read the Thai newspapers) seems to be comprised of drug addicts; murderers; drivers who have "fled the scene"; and porno studs.
Probably a bit like the UK; the Thais love their "bonking vicar" stories on a Sunday morning.
A conversion to Catholicism wouldn't be much of a stretch then?
