Here's the picture that, this week, provoked near-hysteria amongst Thai parents. It shows the female students of Rangsit University simulating oral sex - or "yum-yum" - on their male colleagues during "inappropriate" initiation rituals. Even the fat lasses are getting stuck in.

Our Mango Sauce Nightlife Correspondent kindly snipped it out of the Bangkok Post for me and added a few tongue-in-cheek remarks:

Readers will be pleased to know that after Mango Sauce's Scrabble team complained that Thai girls were not very accomplished at "giving head" (See "The Rock" exposed as Soi Cowboy go-go dancer) the Thai government has quickly responded by initiating a course in this very skill.

Our picture shows university students in course "Giving Head 101" practising the art of oral sex on fully clothed male volunteers. After mastering this technique the girls will progress next term to unclothed men.

In reality, however, the response of Thailand's politicians has been all too predicable. Education Ministry spokesman, Mr. Tosserporn (yes, that's his real name), promised "punitive measures" against the giggling gobblers. He also announced a special hotline where their mates could grass them up.

The photo turned out to be over a year old. It had languished quietly on Pantip.com for months until the suicide of a distressed freshman made "hazing" newsworthy. The Thai media are always looking for excuses to dramatise the sexual habits of young people so this student's unfortunate death was seized upon as an excuse to run countless stories about group masturbation, penis tug-o-war and torched pubic hair. University applications will probably soar as a result.

Fortunately for the fun-loving Rangsit students, the university's deputy rector, Akechart Sompongse, put the opportunistic Mr. Tosserporn back in his box by announcing that that their prank would go unpunished. In a wonderful example of Thai obfuscation, he added that the youngsters weren't actually simulating a sex act - it was all an unfortunate misinterpretation due to "camera angles."
