JonBenet Ramsey's "killer" arrested in Bangkok

karr

This creepy-looking pedophile is John Mark Karr, 41, the self-confessed killer of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey. He was arrested in Bangkok today following a joint Thai/US manhunt.

JonBenet was strangled in the basement of her Colorado home on Dec. 26, 1996 and Karr's arrest at cheap dormitory hotel in Bangkok's Sathorn district could bring to an end a ten-year mystery that many thought would never be solved following the bungled attempts by Boulder police to build a case against JonBenet's own family.

Reports suggest that Karr left the US in 2002 when his teaching credentials were withdrawn in connection with child pornography charges. Resumes posted to the Internet indicate that he subsequently took on short-term teaching assignments in dozens of countries around the world.

When he arrives in Colorado next week, Karr will face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault.

Footnote

He didn't do it and the farce surrounding Karr's arrest is now being called "the most expensive DNA test in history."

creep indeed!

ive been following this case for a while
and feel bad about the fact that i believed alot of the accusations by the media aimed at the parents ... not cool. i guess they can close this case soon now

SPQR says:

This is a classic example of American injustice at its worst.

In the states many police departments and district attornies work hard to create sensational headlines and ignore the real evidence in the case. A recent example of this is the Duke Univerity LaCrosse debacle.

In the JonBent case they actually had this disgusting pedophile in the area with a connection to the family and access. The Boulder Police however wanted more glory so they created the story of the parent's guilt and when that started to stall went after JonBent's brother. The only reason all three of these people were not executed is because the father had a fortune to spend to stave off the police.

The DA tried to get the police to cool it in this case since the Ramsey's obviously were not guilty but the cops refused to let up and then went after the DA. People including the cops started publishing books about the Ramsey's guilt and that they were perverted and made millions. Several of these people even sued the Ramsey family for slander and libel because the Ramsey's dared refute these people's claims against them.

All the while this scumbag Mark Karr was free to continue his evil deeds. In Karr's case there was an established history of him being a pervert and he had lost his teaching credentials in the States long ago as a result. Where he should have been was in prison.

This case will bring some good probably because it show cases all the damage caused by the system allowing pedophiles to roam free even after they have been previously convicted. The police, labs, and DAs will now all have to answer for their deeds as this guy tells his tale and how many others he has abused.

Grunt says:

I wouldnt go so far as to say the parents were without blame as a close comes to this sordid affair.

Had the childs mother been a normal functioning person, said child would most likley not be toddling down the runway at age 5 and thus gaining the attention of the Aqualung types.

This of course begs the question of the murderer himself. Few would assert that a culture soaked in morbid feminism has anything to do with this. But I will.

Witness the increasingly routine antics of the deranged, psychopathic cultists of the "goddess" gleefully sacrificing even thier own progeny upon the abattoir of feminism (or bathtub) 5 at a time...then beating the rap on a technicality.

Ultimately, I cant help but wonder what an investigation into Mr. Karr's mother would turn up. From what Ive seen, the majority of truly depraved sociopaths in the Western world grew up under the iron fist of an abusive mother...not an abusive father.

Gerard says:

Well done !!! They've done a good job getting this asshole arrested, but still hundreds of creepy guys like this hunt youths all around the globe... What's a hell in their brain ????

rh says:

Not necessarily, as the only 'evidence' they have against him is his own so-called 'confession'. In reality they didn't 'catch' him at all. Instead he confided to a university professor via email, the prof tipped off the police and the police tracked him down in Thailand. On the other hand his x-wife, from whom he's been divorced for years said she was with him during the period in which the murder took place. That plus a total absence of signs that he ever went near the place or knew the girl or her family or of any DNA evidence make it a bit early to jump to conclusions.

My wager is that his long obsession with the case (he wrote a whole essay on it while at university or something) plus his battiness and guilt over being a pedo led him to convince himself that he was guilty of the murder. Any takers?

Mick from Isle of Man says:

Seems likely he and his family are milking this for $$$. No one can place him in CO ever! Most likely a. he is a lunatic, b. the Ramsey family is paying him off, c. the Boulder PD is desperate to solve this most sensational case now that the prime suspect is dead and like easy low-life targets, and d. all of the above. I will go with all of the above and oh yeah, this just makes LOS look like the Land of Perverts.

Dana says:

Jeez, life can be tough. I so want this creep to be the murderer but there is No evidence.

Additionally, if the Ramseys had been black one or both of them would have been jailed or executed by now. America has great government documents (Constitution and Bill of Rights) but unfortunately people are in charge.

bangkokram says:

I remember when all of this hit the fan, the pictures of the five year old kid made up to look like cheap extra from Dallas. Also that there are Beauty Pagents for children of this age!!!!

I also rememeber the news reports that squarely put the guilt on the parents, I as usual took this in and agreed with them, although looking back on it now, why would the parents kill the cash cow of the family.

I hope this pervert is guilty, I don't want too revise my opinion again!

MeerKat says:

I hope this guy is really the killer and the case can be resolved.

This guy looks seriously creepy and nerdy, couldnt help but laugh at the pants pulled around the armpits and the shirt buttoned up so high. Hopefully he's not being scapegoated.

The really scary thing is the amount of similar creeps you see in Thailand and Cambodia. SEA just seems to be a magnet for some of the most pathetic people from the West.

Whippet says:

Steady on, David, lawsuits abound - he didn't admit to killing anyone!

Mind you, if his story is true, he would of course be accessory to murder or be on some withholding evidence charge. He's got a guilty look about him, though. :)

Kitten says:

Probably wanted to be moved to a cushy US prison!

Malcolm says:

I don't know whether he's guilty or not, but the more I look at him, the more I don't like him. Expressionless little filth, he is. Piercingly eerie eyes too. Bloody hell. He should be put in jail just for exposing his frighteningly creepy looks to the public at large.

Gurst says:

Regardless of what happened, it's a low blow to Thailand's image. Articles about Thailand as a pedophile haven are big news. I've seen guys like this going solo through Poipet. It's too bad nice Thai girls and Thai people have an association with shit like this.

Caro Malta says:

haha...what's so creepy about his look? I see same faces everymorning in the tube... I always assume its the weather or the early hours of the morninG!

BW says:

Let's review the facts:

Christmas day in the home of a multi-millionaire. The intrusion alarm is conveniently turned off. An "intruder" comes into the house with no forced entry, searches unimpeded until he finds Jon Benet, writes not one but two "ransom" notes, takes her to the basement, assaults/kills her, and then leaves without the slightest inkling he was ever there. Dad "finds" her eight hours later, and he contacts his lawyer along with police...

Occam's razor: inside job.

I said as soon as the story broke that it was BS.

Mick from Isle of Man says:

Apparently, his neigbors said he never had any friends "girls" over. never! also, he had basically run out of money so instead of jumping from the highest balcony decided to get a free first class ticket back to the cozy us of a courtesy of the dumb ass media.

cdub says:

First of all I would like ot throw in my 2 bahts worth and say this guy didn't do it. He is attention starved, and absolutely crazy. What is it about Thailand that makes some foreignors lose the plot? Did this guy lose it long ago and feel like Thailand was the place to be in his mentally deficient state? Or did he finally go over the edge in Thailand?

SPQR says:

Gurst you are sooo right.

I was hiking in the mountains near the house on Wednesday and got a call from a friend of mine. The purpose of his call was to invite me over to a "guys night" X-Box and Ghost Recon.

I happened to be traveling high enough on the trail that I got signal and the 1st thing he said was; "Hey did you hear about who they caught in Thailand?" He then teases me for about 10 minutes as I continued up the mountain.

He is a cool guy and he knows through me a lot about the Thailand that isn't part of the media's whacko circus. The last time he did this was when 20/20 did an expose' on that Dr. Album shit-bag.

Years ago I went to Thailand with a different friend of mine who had never really been out of the country and we went to Phuket.

As usual Phuket's BGs are adult women in their mid 20's to early 30's with a few 40+ year olds that haven't harpooned a buffalo yet. Once he hit Bangla Road I didn't see him much for two weeks. Anyway like a fool he makes a photo album of his exploits and shows it to the guys back home. Despite that fact that these were all clearly consenting adults he was labeled a pervert for engaging in P4P. It took him a year to get that people in the US were mostly shocked at his antics. Despite the fact that this was his over-the-top descent in making a fool of himself see:

Going native: Expats who lose the plot in Thailand.

I got tarred with his brush for my troubles at having brought him. I have no problem whatsoever with P4P and it is legal in Nevada for example. No one seemed interested in my diving photos the guys just wanted to hear me corroborate my friend’s lurid tales as he'd stand there all bleary eyed drunk retelling them at parties. For over a year I couldn't get through to him that the P4P scene he saw in Thailand wasn't the one that people believed. What people who have never been to Thailand see is something that doesn't exist and is a feminazi fantasy and that is how they now see my friend. He just couldn't understand that anyone wouldn't get it the way he did and he got irratated with me for telling him to stop making a fool out of himself.

Fast forward a few years and this guy is getting married and comes to me and says; "Hey you're never going to talk about my time in Thailand are you? You don't think your wife will tell her do you?" Of course I didn't have to, anyone near her had probably seen the pictures. I wouldn't have been surprised to learn that he'd made Christmas cards out of some of the better ones.

For fuck's sake I thought, now you decide to shut your pie hole. Cut in a scene with dozens of horses fleeing an open barn door as my friend finally manages to awkwardly shut as after the last colt breaks free and kicks him in the groin.

Every time some bozo gets caught in Thailand doing something unspeakable I get teased by my friends. Never mind that I am married to small brown and obviously hard working native of the Land of Smiles. ;-)

I have tried to explain this phenomenon (that the rest of the world views Thailand as one giant red light district right out of a Vietnam War film) to my Thai wife but I don't think she fully grasps it...To her the BGs on Sukhumvit and Nana are just country girls trying to make a few baht to support their families. They are no more distraction for her than a Taco Bell is for us here in California.

Today before I drove to work she was on Sanook.com and seemed incensed about a comment by the British Government that Thailand was full of unsavory grifters of all stripes and trades and that you had better keep anything of value well away from the Kingdom.

I was treated to the Thai "death stare" as she grimly reviewed the replies to this offensive news and the subsequent responses posted by other small and similarly enraged Thais to this latest outrage...

She began pecking furiously at our English keyboard and before long had crafted a short but perfect rant in rambling Thai-glish.

She then turned to me and said; "I don't see the story about the man you speak to me of yesterday, where is he?"

nohgoot says:

BW's right. It's BS. I saw that when the story first broke. Even though it's apparent to anyone with at least two brain cells to rub together, the media is clocking the shit out of the piece as if it were the single most important issue of our time. Still, it's nice to catch a break from all of the fear mongering over the perils of Gatorade and hand cream falling into the wrong hands.

philH says:

The article in today's papers here in KL is headlined "Kook or killer?". If, and I stress if, what I am reading is correct there are more inconsistancies in the evidence than bar girls in Pattaya.

More worrying though is the sideline regarding the fact that Thailand is increasingly being seen as a criminal's, especially those on sex charges, hideaway. To quote the article " Child protection groups and criminal experts fear that Thailand's reputation as a haven where crimes go unpunished is attracting foreigners seeking a luxury lifestyle while escaping justice". OK, nothing new there, but sooner or later the Thai authorities will sit up and take notice. There is already talk of stricter rules being applied to foreign teachers.

Elsewhere on this site it has been stated that the Thai's don't care about us farangs, or whatever else you want to call us. This is true, in their minds they don't need us, don't like us and don't want us. Sure they want our money but not the baggage that comes with it. A lot of people talk about the Thai attitude of mai phen rai. But there is another and that is "easy come easy go", tomorrow is another day.

The potential fallout of this one is serious. Never underestimate (or misunderestimate as Dubbya would say) the Thai willingness to slash the throat of the cash cow in order to save face.

SPQR says:

Hi BW,

I'm guessing you and Occam haven't been didling with your razor too much in the states.

I don't know how it is where you are from but here the police and DA usually try to create evidence out of public opinion to make money or seek advancement whenever there is a high profile case. They try the case in the court of public opinion 1st and then use that to drive the system to produce a result to their liking.

Occassionally these butt plugs pay the price for their actions:

http://www.michnews.com/artman/
publish/article_13683.shtml

Another often repeated falsehood is that crimes of these sorts are committed by those who know the victim. This has been known to be false for decades but continues to be repeated as fact since it is easier to obtain convicitions (although against innocents) than to hunt down a serial killer that strikes at random.

American courts are now reguarly releasing people who were wrongly convicted even with botched DNA evidence. While I'm not some bleeding heart I never found any truth in blaming the parents in this case. They were odd but I think it ends there, what about all the other people's kids who were prancing around in all that JonBenet footage they keep showing on the tube, are they all working somewhere in Patpong??? I keep thinking about that Eagles song that should have been the anthem of the disaffected 80's in America: Get Over It.

The cops here were blatantly seeking money and fame and they were painfully obvious. Now the news media has great cause to question this Karr's confession. They are liable for millions in defamation, slander and liable in this case. I can't wait to see them sit and spin too. Imagine now they will try to defend a Pedophile...this is justice I can't wait to see their claims of innocence as they try to stand in defense of this pervert.

I think your friend Occam has other ideas than yours afoot with that razor of his.

aj says:

rumour going around that the only reason he "confessed" is to avoid a long wait in a Thai prison.

Can't blame him on that score

Derukugi says:

We can all only guess from the snippets that we gather from the news.
But from the picture that I get, I`d say:
Kook, not krook.
He is clearly a creepy character, but my guess is that he didn`t do it.

maltesenosher says:

the last time i was in bkk i got into a discussion with some expats about thai jails. i said that if i was ever in ANY danger of coming to the attention of the thai police i would have a story ready for them. i would confess to a high profile crime in a country to which i wished to be repatriated. i would get as much information about the crime as possible and i would make sure i had an alibi to use when i was extradited. the high profile crime would mean that if i was in thai police custody there would be western media attention which hopefully would keep me reasonably safe. the 'major' crime element would ensure extradition assuming the crime i was accused of in the kingdom wasn't of equal value. the only thing this guy seems to have done differently to my plan is that his alibi has come forward before his 'get out of jail free' card was cashed and this has cast doubt on his 'confession'( oh yes..and i would not have used a crime against a child as my banker...more like 'the great train robbery'!!)

maltesenosher says:

america's right wing media (esp. 'fox news') has capitalised on this case as an opportunity for sleazy reporting of thailand. the following is a post i've put on a website that keeps fox under observation and exposes their distortions of the truth ('there are lies, damn lies and bill o'reillies'!)

"At least this story gave o'reilly the chance to dig up a 15 year old piece (didn't he look like 'chandler' from friends?!) about bangkok. unfortunately (for bill) in the last 15 years this vile trade has moved on from bangkok to cambodia and vietnam. although it still exists in bangkok it is no longer as easy to buy a child as bill found it in 1991. a guest on john gibson's show (rudi bhakthan?) talked about young girls being kidnapped and sold to 'the painter bar' in washington square. 'the square' is an american elderly expat hangout and any 'girls' there tend to be over 40. (oh and no bar called 'painter'). However 1 mile away is an area known as 'soi dead artists' as the bars are named after painters. again this area caters to (japanese) tourists looking for more 'mature' company. if people like rudi are going to expose whats left of this trade couldn't they make the effort to get their facts straight. if not they are letting down those who are working to eradicate this sad business. so bill, if you're looking to buy children again (and expose them on tv without attempting to hide their faces!) you now know where not to look!!!"

Mac says:

The pervs in the US media are always eager to 'expose' the sex trade in Thailand by heartily participating in it any time they have the chance. I remember seeing their crews doing the rounds in Patpong during the May 1992 crisis. If their information seems somewhat out of date these days, it may be because they are getting their kicks closer to home. Atlanta, Georgia - the home of CNN - is said to be America's underage sex tourism hub. Pointing fingers at Thailand comes in handy for diverting attention from this.

This story was originally published by Reuters.

Sex tourism thriving in Bible Belt

By Verna Gates and Mickey Goodman Apr 4, 2006

In a sleazy hotel room, "Brittany," then aged 16 and drugged into oblivion, waited for the men to arrive. Her pimps sent as many as 17 clients an evening through the door.

A "john" could even pre-book the pretty young blonde for $1,000 a night, sometimes flying in and then flying out from a nearby airport.

None of this happened in Bangkok or Costa Rica, places that have become synonymous with sex tourism and underage sex.

It took place in Atlanta, the buckle of the U.S. Bible Belt, where the world's busiest passenger airport provides a cheaper, more convenient and safer underage sex destination for men seeking girls as young as 10.

"Men fly in, are met by pimps, have sex with a 14-year-old for lunch, and get home in time for dinner with the family," said Sanford Jones, the chief juvenile judge of Fulton County, Georgia.

A new federal law passed in 2003 ensures that American sex tourists landing on foreign soil and hiring prostitutes under the age of 18 can get 30 years in prison.

But in Georgia, punishment for pimping or soliciting sex with a girl under 18 is only five to 20 years, according to Deborah Espy, the Deputy District Attorney of Fulton County.

"Men are coming to Atlanta to have sex with a child," said LaKendra Baker, project manager for the Center to End Adolescent Sexual Exploitation (CEASE).

Half of the street-level prostitutes in Atlanta are believed to be under 18, according to experts.

Others are booked through Internet sex sites and from social sites like Black Planet, where girls innocently post profiles, said Baker.

Just in March, police arrested a Canadian man meeting a 14-year-old girl he found through the Internet, said Cathey Steinberg, executive director of the Juvenile Justice Fund, which funds treatment for abused girls and prevention.

Another man drove from North Georgia, with a bag containing a teddy bear, a love note and condoms, snorting methamphetamine on the way.

He expected a 13-year-old girl, but instead found Heather Lackey, a corporal with the Peachtree City Police Department.

"People are stunned that Atlanta's the No. 1 sex center in the country," said Steinberg.

The FBI has identified 14 U.S. cities as centers for the sexual exploitation of children. In addition to Atlanta, they are Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Louis, Tampa, and Washington, D.C.

RUNAWAYS AT MOST RISK

In all, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 underage girls are prostituted in the United States, according to a University of Pennsylvania study.

Most youths caught up in the sex trade are runaways, like Brittany, whose 19-year-old "rescuers" soon demanded a return on their investment.

"I didn't have any place to go. My mom hated me for what I was doing to the family," said Brittany, who did not want to be identified by her real name.

Up to 90 percent of runaways are believed to end up as prostitutes, with a third lured into prostitution within 48 hours. Some are sold into sexual slavery by their parents, according to a 2005 study by the Atlanta Women's Agenda.

Some get seduced by recruiters. Pimps use handsome young men and sometimes girls as fronts.

"A 16-year-old controlling a group of girls will not face the same penalties an adult would receive," said Patricia Crone, director of the Office of Juvenile Justice Demonstration Project.

Once snagged, the grooming process begins. Typically, the pimp's friends sleep with her, then come threats, beatings and gang rapes. Caresses and gifts, including drugs and alcohol, follow abuse, the Atlanta Women's Agenda study found.

Brittany said she was showered with fancy dinners, clothes and methamphetamine. But she also describes horror. "It made me feel dirty. It was demeaning," said Brittany.

The sex slaves are trafficked in and out of cities to supply sporting events, conventions or rap concerts.

During the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, one man kept boys and hosted sex parties nightly, said Baker of the group CEASE.

The pimps even held an annual "Player's Ball" in Atlanta in 2003, openly buying and selling women and naming a "Player of the Year," according to the Atlanta Women's Agenda study.

The risks are worth it. While there are few reliable statistics, child sexual exploitation is believed to be the world's third-biggest money maker for organized crime, said Stephanie Davis, policy adviser to Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin.

One reason for the demand is the false assumption that youths are disease-free.

On the contrary, with tissues not fully developed, they are more prone to lacerations. HIV infections among females aged 16 to 21 are 50 percent higher than for men, a 1998 study in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes reported.

Atlanta has won two new federal grants to establish units to fight the trafficking of underage sex slaves and to hire more undercover detectives, said Carole Morgan, director of the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy.

But the experts fear that may not be enough.

"It won't stop until people say, 'My city isn't safe for kids anymore,"' said Crone.

"This is a place where you can buy, sell or rent kids. It must be stopped."

This has to be the most stupid report I've yet seen. If you scroll down the the "Pedophile Paradise" video link, this idiot bitch goes on about indentured children forced to work in 'painter bars' IN 'Washington Square'.

Not only is her geography fucked up, but can you think of any two places with a higher average age of ladies working in the bars?

These are places where Western businesmen go to have a quiet drink after work (well, for the most part).

Dumb cunt.

Dr BobRix says:

CNN did a great spread yesterday on guys who plead guilty to murder, rape etc. Theses confessors turn out to be false and CNN classed them as the Rock Stars of Murder or some epithet equally nefarious. So… is this guy seeking his 15 minutes? Who knows, but as sure as God made little green ones he came to the wrong place if he is really a pedophile. In this scenario you find the antithesis of guilty-by-association in that those hiding in the shadows employ a technique perfected in the Ghettos of Poland during the second world war in that innocence-by-disassociation or, more precisely, if not commonly; innocence-by-exposure was employed whereas if you were to identify or reveal a Jew, Jew family or Jew lover then it was more than likely you were not one (ha ah! Watson). So our latest extradited cRock Star would have been better off if he had continued lurking in the shadows of Penang. But if he is a real Pedophile then, in Penang, it would have been almost impossible to get the food craved and a hike up to BKK or over to Cambodia would have been ultimately on the proverbial cards. Maybe he came for a weekend shopping? Maybe he’s been a dozen times before? Who knows, but I can’t imagine that he got off the plane, grabbed a cab, and asked the taxi driver the best place to find a nice 12yo (Johnnie Walker). More likely he lurked after learning where to lurk and hence a Judas Goat familiar with lurking where the lurkers lurk, led him ‘home’.

Jaques says:

Thanks for the link USV. That Fox news report is outrageous! That woman's report is so far off the mark it sounds like she just made it up off the top of her head the night before when having a drink at the bar. Unbelievable bullshit. Or am I walking around blind?

asia says:

I followed the link to the Pedophile Paradise video at foxnews.com. OK she gets the location of her tits and ass mixed-up but there is journalistic technique to that and, not-to-mention; it’s pretty insignificant anyway unless you’re a BKK tourist-map maker. The bottom line is that she hits an audience a gazillion times that of the guy who made the comment about her in this article. The bigger bottom line is the free advertising to the sort of ‘traveler’ that the Thai government proclaims that it doesn’t need… or, as she suggest, does it? She goes on, “as they (the gov’t) make a lot of money from this sex industry”. She openly says the Entertainment Places Act 1966 says that the places tourist go are exempt from the Anti Trafficking Law of 1997 or any laws banning prostitution. She confers with the broadcasting guy (John) that “the only reason people go to Thailand is for the sex industry”. She says the gov’t make a lot of money from their car and computer industries but a big portion (she quotes 3%) of their GDP comes from the sex industry. So, unless you got sent to the LOSlimes on the pain of death by your company, and forced to stay there, then, sad or not, you no doubt expect to get tarred by this current brush.

Chico says:

He certainly looks creepy, but whatever happened to innocent till proven guilty?

Latest on the John Karr case is that the state of Colorado has dropped all charges in what has been described as the most expensive DNA test ever.

He is still wanted in California on charges of having kiddie porn on his computer.

The real guilty parties in this whole sordid affair seem to be the Colorado police who have screwed up in the most spectacular fashion. Perhaps Fox News should run one of their exposes on them. I'm sure "laughing gal" Rudi and her anchorman would be only too pleased to oblige being so zealous to drag up the muck and to hell with the evidence.
