Cabbies rob female tourists
Female tourists should take care when they hail a taxi in Bangkok. Two women have recently been brutally robbed by yellow-green taxi drivers.
Last month, Japanese Airways stewardess Yoshimi Noguchi was shot by her driver close to Siam Square and dumped beside the road. She survived but lost a kidney. On Monday, Lee Yan Chuan from China was injured when her driver knocked her down on the motorway during an attempted robbery.
In spite of an intense manhunt, both men are still at large. Alarmed at the possible impact on Thailand's tourist industry, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is considering doubling the penalty for robbers who injure tourists.
There are 30,000 yellow-green taxis plying Bangkok's streets. For the time being, visitors might be well advised to choose taxis painted with different colours.
