As the noose of political correctness and media censorship grows ever tighter in Thailand, it was nice to see yesterday's Bangkok Post enjoying a little subversive fun. Look at this mincer's name and then try telling me that he got his daft blue face in the paper because of his critically acclaimed performance.

Today, I also noticed a story about a fella who was duped out of 6,000 baht by a Thai woman calling herself Pu. She used the same old sick mother sob-story that they all do. The surprising part of the tale is that her victim was Thai - and a senior environmental official to boot. Reportedly, the red-faced civil servant decided not to file a complaint with the police.

In the UK, we call this scam "obtaining money by deception" and offenders can expect a short jail term. Until now, though, I had no idea that the practice is also illegal in Thailand. What would happen if this were to become common knowledge? If every fleeced farang decided to exercise his legal rights, the jails of Thailand might soon be overflowing with hordes of tattooed slappers.

Finally, here's another piece that caught my eye:

Kuala Lumpur - A leading Malaysian political party yesterday slammed a decision to charge a couple with indecent behaviour for holding hands in a public park. Ooi Kean Thong and Siow Ai Wei have been summonsed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall for the alleged offence.

"But the move would make Malaysia the laughing stock of the world and affect its booming tourism industry," said S. Vijayaratnam, vice-president of the Gerakan party, part of the ruling National Front Coalition.

"It is the norm for western couples to hold hands in public. Will they be arrested too? He said - AFP"
