Free wireless broadband in Thailand (It's True)

Free wireless ADSL broadband in Thailand

Free wireless broadband sounds too good to be True but, in Thailand, most people don't bother to secure their wireless Internet connections and many apartment buildings have now become free Wi-Fi hotspots.

The grumpy Swiss bloke in 14B who takes ladyboys four at a time probably doesn't even realise that half the building is piggy-backing his high-speed Internet connection.

This is how they do it:

  1. Modern PCs come with all the necessary hardware pre-installed. You'll see a switch bearing the above symbol. Turn it on. If you've got an older PC, you'll have to buy a USB wireless dongle from Pantip Plaza (for about 1,500 baht).
  2. Windows XP users should click Start > Connect To > Show all connections.
  3. Right-click on "Wireless Network Connections" and select "View Available Wireless Networks."
  4. Select an unsecured wireless network from the list and click the "Connect" button.
  5. That's it. Go forth and reap the bounty of the airwaves.

Signal range is up to 100 meters - the typical distance between Bangkok 7-Elevens. Imagine the sheer indulgence of reading Mango Sauce poolside or of browsing hardcore pornography while locked safely in the bathroom.

If you want your own broadband Internet connection, True is Thailand’s leading service provider but they've used their dominant market position to impose a piss-taking premium for wireless access. Tomorrow, I'll show you how to thwart the cheating buggers by turning your dreary fixed-line to a dreamy wireless network without paying them an extra penny (See True wireless broadband without the rip-offs).

Right now, though, I need to use the bathroom.

I'm in switzerland enjoying sushi at Yooji's reading mangosauce hooking up their free wifi. Its just great. Btw i am doing this with the new Nokia E61 which features WiFi and a terrific web browser. A must have for frequent travellers.
