Thai true stories: Lively chicken dinner

Thai true stories: Lively chicken dinner

Last year, I met a young backpacker called Adam who had visited rural Isaan for the first time. Unable to speak Thai, he communicated with the locals using sign language.

For dinner, he wanted to eat chicken but couldn't make the waiter understand. Getting to his feet, he pretended to be a chicken by flapping his elbows and bobbing his head. The waiter gestured that he didn't understand and called his Thai buddies over to help. Adam obliged by adding sound effects to his routine.

By now, the kitchen staff too had gathered round. Suddenly, Adam realized that everyone was having a good laugh at his expense. Life is pretty quiet upcountry and a big farang pretending to be a chicken is quality entertainment. He sat down in a huff.

Seconds later, the waiter emerged from the kitchen carrying a struggling live chicken. With a flourish, he set it down on Adam's plate.

John U says:

I have picked up some Thai during my visits, and a friend of mine was quite impressed that I could order some food in Thai.

He was quite fond of the rice soup the Thais eat in the morning, so I taught him to order "kow twm moo" for pork, or "kow twm kai" for chicken.

He practiced this a few times, and next morning, came down full of confidence and ordered "kow twm kee".

Well all the Thais pissed themselves laughing, and although I knew he'd got it wrong I didn't know what "kee" meant. After I looked it up I could understand the hilarity.

Well it's good to make people laugh isn't it>

Johnny says:

There is a Thai restaurant opposite a lively pub in Sydney here, so I imagine they get alot of drunk guys ordering on a Friday and Saturday night. One dish on the menu is Khao Kee Mao (Rice Shit Drunk), really good food by the way.
