You may be thinking of Nairn not Um - 'cause if I recall correctly um is not particularly smart and never went to Uni? Nairn is Bang Mod presenter if I recall correctly, and can be seen in a number of VCDs.

Anyway...As a genuine Thai I'd just point out that beauty is based on limited supply. The same as luxury goods are luxury because they are distant from something (usually on the basis of restriction of supply or through price), beauty is the same. Western women are desirable (or used to be) 'cause they were slim and tanned. Hard to be tanned in a climate in the middle of winter - only the rich chicks (i.e. distant from the rest) could afford to get that fake look. In the same way, sadly Thailand is currently in a white skin phase, where white skin is prized over dark skin. Interestingly, I can guarantee that virtually none of the superstars on Thai TV have particularly white skin, Um included. Very fair skin is usually acheived through lighting, not make up.

The reason ya don't see women looking like beauty queens all the time is because in each country, if everyone looked like a beauty queen, then how would we choose between them? So instead, media, us, everyone decides - ah yes, all the other women have small boobs, so a woman with BIG boobs is perfection.

Just look at pin ups and role models over the last 50 years and you'll see massive differences. Both in Thai and in Western tastes.

Your observations in this thread that "gee Thai men are so stupid, why can't they choose some dark skinned cutey from anywhere in some mall..." well for a start your argument is the same as saying any typical white chick is a beauty contestant, 'cause beauty means having big boobs. You'd be wrong to suggest that any white chick could be a winner in the same way as most of the women you'd like to see could be a winner here.

Thai tastes are different to some of your tastes. Um is popular as a pin up, in the same way say Brittany is popular as a pin up. Or Pamela Anderson. But a lot of other guys would prefer say Pim from Zaza or Yosawadee (names that come up a lot as beautiful). Both different and pretty. (Incidentally, Yosawadee is half Isaan, half Hong Kong.)

It is fairly insulting to suggest that Thai people should adopt your tastes, and it would be equally insulting to suggest that white people's tastes in Thai women or any other women is somehow inferior to Thai tastes just because white men, on average (but not always, but on the basis of my and my friends' observations) tend to prefer shorter darker women. Shorter darker women are in no way less attractive than taller, whiter women. However, they are somewhat more common, and additionally beauty pagaents have height restrictions, which rules out women under say 165cm (and incidentally I prefer short women so that means more for me since some beauty queen would probably not consider me, despite the fact, that I am probably the most hansum man ever), this reduces their chances. Additionally, there are multiple screens and a large influence from "maew mongs" and the prevalence of "dek sen" means that a poor under priveleged girl is gonna struggle against someone more connected.

Wrong? of course. TIT? No way. In the same way that western beauty pagaents massively favour women who can afford plastic surgery, braces, good portfolio shots, etc - so it is in the Thai beauty pagaent world.

Sadly, I think that this argument is probably not going to fly with the current government, given that during a period of increased visa fees, bird flu and early closings... that tourism numbers are up and from next week almost all major hotels will be full occupancy. Tourist spending is up and so are many other bits of the "non-sex tourism" economy - while you may see that Thailand should indeed set itself up as a sex tourist capital for the world, some others would like to see a country with several sectors in the economy, and if this means reducing dependance on the sex tourist bit then so be it. Given that the sex tourism countries competing would be Indo, Vietnam, Cambodia and so forth, logic would suggest that this is not the route to increasing the wealth of the average citizen.

But then again, we all like scorin dem hos for cheap, so let;s all just hope that somehow the economy will crash big time, lots of people won't have food and thus short time will drop back down to 200 baht like the good old days.

What could I possibly say? when one of my classmate in Thailand said when she was 14 that she wanted to marry a FaRang. I told them that they were all just poor whores. It was wrong I know, but it was the easiest solution. I know some good thai women who are married to much older FaRangs. One is my mom's closest freind, the other I just met here and she has been extremely kind to me.She's like my family here. I met the second one's FaRang husband. With the word FaRang I would like to acknowledge you that it is a very old word. It in fact comes from the word France or French as they are one of the earliest foreigners that came to Siam. People at that time couldn't pronouce France probably. It becomes FaRang and they continued using it to called other foreigners with the same complexion. Since it is a very handy and easy word, it had been passed on to our genaration and we still use it nowadays. We wish there is a word like Asians that you can use to refer to us all.

However, the comparison fails to consider the underlying motivation for the melanin transformation. Using your allusion to a "historical nature", Thais are "white skin mad" because they are, in essence, escaping a stigma. Note: I've excluded from my sample Thais, notably, elderly and "khun-ying-Hi-So" women, who use whitening creams (e.g. hydroquinone-based) for hyperpigmentation and skin discolorations. Each person has their own opinion....certainly many farang here are more worldly than the other farang in their own country who don't have the desire to leave their own country and explore.

However, given the powerhouse universities and cutting edge businesses overseas compared to the VERY questionable value a lot of farang add to businesses here and given that many farang here pursue professions such as teaching english or boiler rooms which aren't usually associated with intellect - given that Thailand could hardly be considered a hotbed of intellectual discussion.... For the most part, Khao Sahn road tourists are some of the least travelled - Khao Sahn rd looks like any other backpacker place in the world - the only difference is the price and type of beer. In the same way, some (but certainly not all) of the farang I work with can't speak Thai; don't have any Thai friends; have minimal interest in anything outside NEP and complain nonstop about all the things about Thais that they don't like. They are certainly not friendly to their workers; to Thai people around them and they show little desire to do, eat, or travel to see anything outside what they used to do back home.

I am curious where you get this number. In one of the business areas I work in, spending per tourist is a key driver for our business, and the number 1 nationality for spending are Indians - almost all coming over as couples or families. They spend (if I can recall the numbers correctly) about 4700b a day compared to westerners (i.e. who you are talking about) who average around 3500b a day total. Australians and Americans are not particularly high spenders, incidentally. TAT publishes all this stuff. Our own measurement systems show that single farang men are a time waste target 'cause they don't spend anything - of course we are just one sector of the Bangkok retail economy - the same men may save their money for (ahem) NEP and drop far more there!!

I don't believe that farang here are bad guys at all - I just don't think that I would describe them as a great bunch of blokes better than what you'd find somewhere else which is what I responded to on the 22nd.

It's sad that when people get angry they tend to generalise so much.

People have different tastes. That's fine. But if you don't like someone, that doesn't automatically mean that they're inferior.

To claim that all people of such and such a race are racist is ignorant, and the words "pot", "kettle", and "black" come to mind. Not all Thai men prefer tall, pale girls. Not all farangs prefer the opposite. Some do.

There may be something in the argument that the unfamiliar has appeal, but several studies of beauty have actually concluded that the most "average" features - in the sense of the most "in the middle" of millions of possible features - tend to be the ones most accepted as beautiful, by most nationalities. Is Um average in this sense? She's certainly beautiful - as are many of the small, dark-skinned women I meet here in Isaan, which might seem contradictory, but I think isn't. If these two points about beauty can both be true, then we should perhaps accept and even welcome diversity of opinion.

Speaking personally, as a farang who has been to Thailand perhaps 20 times and only slept with one Thai in my life (after courting her for five months), I object to the comment that sex is the sole motive for farangs to come here. I came here because I like good people, and met many when visiting family here. Yes, I of course wanted a partner, and most women round here happen to be Thai. As for my taste in women? I've had three European girlfriends, a black girlfriend, a very pale Chinese-looking girlfriend and now I have a short, dark, Thai girlfriend, whom I hope to marry. All of them beautiful, so far as I was concerned. Lucky for me, all of them jai-dii.

And no, I'm not here because I couldn't get a good job back home, as Thai Man suggests. I quit a $110,000 p.a. job back home because I was sick of doing stuff that didn't directly contribute to the wellbeing of others. Perhaps what I've done since moving here has only helped a few people - but that still makes me happy. And no, I'm not, I hope, not some kind of patronising cultural imperialist. I have many problems with the "development community" both in Isaan and Laos, where I have also worked. I try to give people tools to do their own thing, and to pass on a few very specific skills that I have acquired through my good fortune. I have no say in what people do with those tools.

I'm also, I admit it, doing some work in the language-teaching sphere: I'm collaborating on the production of what we hope to be a decent English language textbook. It's "creative commons" (i.e. reproduction permitted without fee). This means, simply, if it's not good, people won't use it. It's up to them.

The same goes for offering vocational skills to bar girls. If they choose not to go for a "respectable" job - because they can earn more (often for their families) from sex, or because they enjoy a party-hard lifestyle - that's their decision. Just as it's the Thai government (and tourist board's) decision whether or not to passively endorse the "sexy" connotation of Thailand which attracts single male tourists. Cash, so often, rules.

This fact, and the fact that I try, both at work and without, to be naam-jai without fully understanding Thai culture, means I've been ripped off by a few people. Does that make me hate Thais? No, it makes me consider what money can do. And I'd rather be ripped off by 10 people less fortunate than me than by one rich bastard back "home".

One thing some of the people I've worked with here have taught me is not to stereotype people. I meet plenty of farangs who are here just to buy sex. I used to get really sick with them and exasperated with the Thai (and Lao) girls who went down that route. I wondered if Thailand really should close its doors a little to discourage "the wrong type of people". But I talked to some of the women, and they said, in effect, "who are you to judge who is the 'right type of person'?". Each person has good and bad within them, and good and bad motives for everything they do. Often these farangs are frustrated or bitter. Often they fall in love. Often they treat the girls well. Often they don't. Same goes for the girls. Motives can be complex.

Which brings me back to the cliche about Asians liking pale skin and farangs liking tanned skin. The motives of this are complex and not necessarily racist (i.e. fear/hatred of the different). As has been pointed out already, skin tone can be generalised as a measure of wealth - with the opposite conclusions in cold vs hot climates. And wealth is more often than not thanks to an accident of birth, rather than some sign of personal excellence. I know plenty of rich, lucky people from Thailand or Europe or wherever who are by no means excellent people. Some may look nice on first appearance, but they'll soon turn ugly in your eyes if they've got no grace inside.

Accept people, and they'll often turn show beauty in some way.

Ackel, you went ok until the point where you started to rationalise by saying that you'd "rather be ripped off by 10 people less fortunate than me than by one rich bastard back home". There is an element of denial there too. People always correct something they find wrong by getting into this relative-comparative frame of mind. It is a survival mechanism at best and revelatory. You have connected your being ripped off precisely to the situation where you do not "fully understanding Thai culture." This is an incentive to find out and learn more perhaps? Obviously the more you learn and integrate your experiences in Thailand into your worldview the better the outcome. Now I don't mean just about language here. I've met individuals who speak fluent Thai and read the local paper everyday but are clueless when it comes to finer subtler things like revealing dissembled motives. For instance, I knew a foreign lecturer at a university who has been here 25 years, has local wife and kids and has an unusually high IQ. But when a colleague points out to him, for instance, that after class the students should wait until he leaves rather than shove him aside and walk out he goes into a "I am a jolly informal western fellow" mode thereby missing the point entirely. This is Thailand and in Thailand a teacher who invites this kind of behaviour from students is allowing massive disrespect to his person and office and by doing so jeopardises his position. That is how it is perceived all round. Now whose reality reigns supreme here? Their collectively shared one or the one he has brought with him from back "home"? So while I totally agree with you when you connected the dots of lack of awareness to being ripped off I think using an unrelated non-topic situation to make that look ok is a trap. A trap because it can end up repeating itself.

They say this and this is a very Buddhist way of looking at things where it's fifty-fifty, half good and half evil. It is up to the individual to attain goodness. Which means mainstream culture and a Buddhist outlook (not to mention peasant animist tradition) has endowed them with an amoral nature, at least from a Christian or Western point of view. This is baffling and hard to stomach for some western people. Very liberating for others. Your attitude - or dilemma - towards prostitution is a case in point.

My opinion (if its worth anything at all) is that Patcharapa is quite a pretty young thing but like wine it all boils down to personal taste. Some people will tell you that they prefer red to white. Some might say they prefer a Merlot to a Burgundy. The point i'm trying to make is I see it very much as "horses for courses / each to their own" and there is nothing wrong with that at all. Somewhere along the line this thread went off at various tangents, all of which made me continue to scroll down to the bottom with keen interest.
The beauty of these things is the everyone gets the chance to speak and be heard without fear of being cut off.
So, having said that, my two pennies worth goes like this. A few have complained of farangs only visiting the land of smiles to sample the "local delicacies". Yes, while this may not be true for all of us it does happen nevertheless. But, if the dishes are on the menu, some, not all, may be tempted to try them. Take them off and not only will you not be able to blame farangs for their mis-spent holiday money but you may even clean up your streets and public opinion. Sounds like a priceless doctorine for any political party looking to take over from a militarily run regime? Of course, I dont have to mention the down side to having so many thousands (probably) of young pretty girls out of work, who have no way of supporting the families back home and have no concept or no wish of actually having to find a real job for a small percentage of the salary the might have had the opportunity to make otherwise.

Its a shame, its a bit harsh, but true.
