Google pulls the plug (again)

For reasons that I don't understand, Google has removed hundreds of Mango Sauce pages from its top search results.

Visitor numbers have crashed and the site is no longer financially viable.

Oh, fuck. Major bummer, David. Major.

Road Natzi says:

David,

Has this happened to other sites, or just yours. Would you like me to make a call to google on your behalf, I might be able to give them a little dose of the rn and see if i can shake them a bit???

Up to you big guy.

-------------

Hi Road Natzi

If only it were that simple...

I just had a call from a fellow Thailand Webmaster who says that exactly the same thing has happened to him.

Google updated their infamous algorithm a few days ago and there were obviously winners and losers.

By feeding my own, previously successful, search terms back into Google, I've established that the main winners are the SEO savvy peddlers of content-free Google AdSense-funded flypaper.

David

David

Is there anything we can do to help? Hate to see your site go.

stef says:

its everywhere dude. G is penalizing sex related blogs, but some seem to be recovering. a travel site where sex is only a very minor part of the content i work on is suffering too

Road Natzi says:

David,

If I was Common, I would come up with a big long pat on the back about myself and how I was going to buy Google and stop this practise, but I just can't do that.

I guess the only thing I can say to you is hang in there and keep up the good work, fuck google and all who ride upon her !

Mac says:

Oh man, that sucks. From my understanding, you aren't able to get re-listed after something like that happens are you. Aren't you launching a new site though?

NotAnyBangkokRelatedWebsite.com says:

My experience with this kind of thing is that it's often some sort of "eddy" in the Google space-time continuum. After the next refresh or whatever (typically 3 or 4 weeks, maybe less) the site should probably bounce back.

Weasel, cold says:

Perhaps it's karma. The quality (and frequency) of the articles has taken a dive recently. And the sickening and unimaginative baiting between readers that passes for comment is a big turnoff. With or without Google, I don't think this site is going to be very successful if it continues in its current direction.

meister says:

Start a bargirl investigation / all expenses paid whoring weekend in Pattaya service.

Grunt says:

For fucks sake, I have been saying for how many months now, google sent in its army of fuckwits (dicer et al) to fill the comments section with a sea of worthless navel gazing alpha-male psycho babble that drove the regulars away.

Plus, and newbies stumbling upon MS would be driven away screaming .

Now nobody is around the give a shit, so google pulls the plug...again!

If its true that other LOS blogs have been given the same treatment that merely adds further proof that this was a concentrated PR effort put forth by the politically correct minions of googledom.

You have only yourself to blame David. I made repeated attempts to warn you you were under attack. My ears perked up over the last few days when I havnt seen any dicer posts...now I know why.

TANAI KWAI says:

This is catastrophic. I hope we can get a news agency's interest. Can anyone explain whether this is a targeted attack or the consequence of a more general algorithmic shift?

Mango Sauce is still showing up in my google searches so it hasn't been entirely purged from the DB (if that's even possible).

weblog junkie says:

Could this be related to the proposed censorship of the media by the CNS? Similar to the Google censorship imposed by the Chinese gov't?

tingtawng says:

David,

A lot of businesses suffer because of Google's popularity - what they giveth they can taketh away.

Personally I think Google's popularity is hurting the web in general - with too many content developers writing gibberish that's SEO'd to the max while being unreadable to humans.

If you want to feel part of a crowd, go here:-

tingtawng says:

Are you sure David?

I got over 500 pages listed on mangosauce.com here:-

http://www.google.com/search?q=site:mangosauce.
com&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&start=60&sa=N

-----------

Hi tingtawng

For the most part, the pages are still listed in Google's index but they're not appearing as prominently in its search results.

David

Mr Thaksin, BKKchat.org says:

don't let the fuxxers get you down Davo.
Google is doomed like all facist censorship sites.
you may have to take a rest mate in the shortime, but trust me "you'llllllll be backkkkk"

Thaxo.

hueston says:

We're all with you David. Remember last time this happened? They gave Stick a hard time too. It's temporary.

---------------

Hi hueston

I hope you're right.

Regards
David

Lewis says:

I unfortunately agree with Weasel. The quality and frequency of your posts plummeted recently. I found myself coming back to MS less and less. Esp. with no posts from Dicer lately, either.

One main way to renew your publicity, and probably get new money, is to attack the biggest, most prominent target you can find in LOS, a la Moscow-based The eXile (www.exile.ru). Then you can literally be David vs. Goliath.

Or perhaps you could always teach English, or get hired by another group and just write for them?

concerned citizen says:

Your 3 ads only bring in 600US a month - how is that financially viable?

-------------

Hi CC

You missed the other 3 ads.

Webmastering is possibly the world's most competitive occupation and it's certainly the worst paid but a little money goes a long way in Thailand.

Or at least it did...

Regards
David

smiler says:

Bunch of twats.
Could just be one of those special google journeys when your site vanishes into the arse end of nowhere for 3-4 weeks though. You will not be the first webmaster to draw mud on that trip David.
mango sauce is top of the UK google search index, for whatever that is worth. Have you tried your search terms here:

http://www.mcdar.net/dance/index.php

Any ideas for a new site name?

------------

Hi Smiler

I hope you're right. I'll see what happens to this site over the next few weeks before I consider setting up another.

Regards
David

Max says:

What would make anyone say that Google is doomed? That's ridiculous.

Grunt says:

At the root of this entire debate is political correctness.

Is Mango Sauce politically correct? No.

Is google politically correct? Yes.

How many females do you suppose "work" over at google?

By exposing the many many MANY faults of the average western female (and by default the equally numerous perks that come with hot young Thai girls)...David made of himself a big fat target.

All it took was some bloated American skank crammed in some google HQ cubicle to stumble upon Mango Sauce...and declare a femino-jihad.

Dana says:

I have to say the breath is just leaving my lungs. I feel like the plug is being pulled on Thailand and I have not got another idea where to go.

TANAI KWAI says:

Lewis,

You couldn't be more of an asshole.

Dicer says:

The amount of venomous, xenophobic and unreflective (in the sense of info or thoughts) stuff that comes out of the mainstream in Thailand this past couple of month is not headed to a promising direction. One of Mangosauce's great appeal (amongst many) is that it is a place where many of us feel the temperature of the place. And come to share our thoughts.

Lewis, I have to say that you've lost the plot here. This is David's website and all the effort he's put into it deserves the reward and readership which I'm sure it's going to keep getting irrespective of google or the denigrating remarks of the likes of you. Well what else is out there that is on par with mangosauce? Can't stand people who gleefully cheer at the misfortune of others so spare us.

David, I hope you'll persevere in keeping the name and format of this website until the storm blows over.

---------------

Hi Dicer

I agree that the current format is the right one - regardless of what Google might think.

Before they pulled the plug, Mango Sauce attracted somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors per month.

According to Alexa, Mango Sauce has (or had) more traffic than the Tourism Authority of Thailand - an organisation with 1,000 staff and an annual budget of 100 million US dollars (4 billion baht).

25,445 - Mango Sauce
51,607 - Tourism Authority of Thailand

(Position in Alexa world rankings)

In contrast, Mango Sauce operates on pocket change.

Despite attracting a large and loyal readership, the site's income is almost entirely dependent on Google because first-time visitors referred by search engines are 10 times more likely to click on an ad than regular visitors.

Paradoxically, the site's least-dedicated readers are the ones who keep it going.

Regards
David

Common Sense says:

David,
Your previos posting about google had advisements about what we could do to help. Is there any suggestions this time. I would be more than willing to do anything possible to lend a hand.

-----------

Hi Common Sense

My previous run in was with 'Scott The Google AdSense Team.'

When you're dealing with a human being, there's always the possibility of getting a decision overturned (unless he's a pompous little snowboarding prick) but, on this occasion, it's all down to a computer program.

Many thanks for your offer of help but I think the only option in this case is to wait and see.

Websites can and do rise up again from the bottom of Google's search rankings.

Regards
David

Mac says:

To "Mac" (January 11, 2007 7:42 PM)
I have been posting intermittently here on MangoSauce for a year or so using the name Mac, most recently on the thread 'Thailand blogger jailed for beating up old lady'. (January 8, 2007 11:41 PM)

I would hate to see you have your reputation damaged by being confused with me. I suggest that in future you post under a different name, so as to clearly differentiate yourself from other posters - something like Pants Elm, or Dicen, or Prufrot, or Not Common Sense.

Thanks,
Mac

Mac says:

Forgot to mention - I also have the dubious distinction of having been the first to post on Bangkok Girlfriend.

Mac

clueless says:

man, you are so stupid, I really don't want to do this posting. but I will because you are totally clueless.

just like stickman, you post things on your websites with no concern for the parties in the stories.

if you ruin someone's life with one of your stories, you don't give a f#ck.

it is even more tragic in that you go about doing this many times without any proof to substantiate your claims.

according to you, it's your freedom of speech. as if to say lying is also permitted.

personally, I'm glad they closed your site down. it was about time.

-------------

Hi Farangs.org spokesman

"if you ruin someone's life with one of your stories, you don't give a f#ck."

Why don't you tell us what happened to the innocent man you had convicted of rape?

I think you'll find that it was YOU who ruined a man's life.

Regards
David

PS. You have yet to identify a single incorrect fact in any of the articles I wrote about you and I swear that I will eventually find out what happened to your victim and hold you accountable.

PPS. Don't write me off just yet.

dingdongrb says:

Okay....What the f#@k did everyone do before 'Google'? Sell chit on ebay?

So ads keep your site going. Then post ads that we will click on....'Like free panties from Thai bar girls, you pay the postage...' ....or perhaps.... 'Tom Yung Goong receipes for sell'....or even.... 'Hire a hitman and get rid of Dicer.'

Anyway, if it's worth anything, I did a search on Google from Hong Kong just now and you were at the top. I'll try from China when I get back in a week. But right now I'm 2 hours away from boarding my Thai Airways flight and heading back to the great LOS for my week off....Yahoooo.... errr, I mean....Google....

Common Sense says:

Mac (The Original)
You will be looked up to, and admired by us for years to come for holding such a dubious distinction. Something I'm sure you will be proud to tell your grandchildren about. Honestly though, the distinction should have went to Dicer, and you fuckin ruined it.

Burn in hell, you bastard.

David,
There was previously a lot of information on blog websites about what keywords would suit you on top of googles search results. I originally found your website while searching for Bangkok hotels, so i'm sure you were aware of these keywords and tailored to them. From my understanding blogs are categorized by the first few words of the article, and what was included in the postings. If the readership of MangoSauce could aid in determining what keywords would help in our blogs, then we could help you out.

Despite our differences gents, this is a noble, yet sleazy, cause worth our efforts. Let's find out what we need to do to keep the Mango alive.

P.S. Lewis, go suck your own fucking cock. I can't recall you ever having an opinion on here you little cunt.

---------------

Hi Common Sense

My webstats record the search terms that people use to find the site and I'm sorry to report that 99% couldn't be repeated in polite company.

Mango Sauce has been demoted to page 4 for the term "Bangkok Bank" but still commands the top spot for "Shit on your table" (in quotes).

Regards
David

BigDUSA says:

I just did a Goggle on Mango Sauce and your site came up.

---------

Hi BigDUSA

Sadly, the only people likely to google that term are housewives looking for recipe tips.

The key to generating traffic is to get page 1 listings for terms like "bukkake sluts."

Regards
David

Kasman says:

This site uses canned prepared software so no cost, there.

There is a cost for a server sure, if it's a dedicted server more expense, shared server not much expense at all.

Yet because it is googles fault the site is no longer financially viable?

What you are really saying is, you cannot afford to stick around because you need income generated from Mango Sauce that is no longer there?

This is another retarded excuse from a Wannabe webmaster.

If you really were a webmaster and knew even a little about software code, you would realize you probably had 100,000 potential customers per month right at your fingertips.

Yet no ecommerce store selling Mango Sauce Shirts or any other ecommerce to take advantage of the many visitors to sell products to, which are plentiful all over Thailand in wholesale format.

I would surmise you did not do this because you have no work permit to be operating this website and try to fly just low enough under the radar to get busted or outed like Stickman?

Ever notice Tanai Kwai's new site is the same format as Mango Sauce? Same canned software there as well.

This site has limited to no expense and I suggest if you cannot afford the expense of this site with no google revenue, then you probably should not be living in Thailand due to lack of income.

Every farang in Thailand that has a hard time making it or surving here always has someone in line to blame.

You David have posted yourself more times on this one post, than many posts previously due to the fact that you want to repeatedly seek support from your readers that google wronged you personally? Wacked is all I can say

The fact is that farangs need income to survive here.

Some farangs have it cushed with high paying expat jobs of long duration.

Some decide to make in on a teachers income.

Some have had it made, only to lose their income source and are forced with the decision to stick it out or go back home.

It is part of life and it's no ones fault. Any foreigner wanting to spend their whole life in Thailand better have a way to make a bonafide income if they want to stay here long term

Galt may be an ASS but he has been here 5 years with his motorcycle light business, so it is possible

We all have decisions how far we will go in order to stay in Thailand. Its not googles fault or IBM or Bill Gates fault.

Put all your eggs in one basket and you are guaranteed to fail here as soon as that one income source fails.

Its not googles fault, it is your own fault for not having a backup plan

Maybe Galt can hire you as an assembler or something to tide you over?

--------------

Hi Kasman

Thanks for the suggestion but those dusty piles of unsold T-shirts might make my apartment look untidy.

Your concern about my financial wellbeing and immigration status is touching but misplaced.

On balance, I think I'll stick to the scribbling because the market for injection-moulded after-market turn indicators is already looking crowded.

Regards
David
